Wave Code product guide

Complete your first coding task with Wave Code

A practical workflow for giving the agent a small, testable task and reviewing the result.

Choose a task you can verify

Start in a project you own or have permission to change. Save your current work in version control, open the project in Wave Code, and select a small issue rather than asking for a complete application in one request. Confirm the project runs before asking the agent to modify it; otherwise an existing setup error can look like a problem caused by the change.

Write a focused request

Include the problem, expected behavior, and how success can be checked. For example, if your JavaScript application accepts duplicate items, adapt this illustrative prompt to your actual project:

Find where shopping-list items are added.
Ignore a new item when an existing name matches after trimming
and ignoring case. Preserve the original display names.
Explain the change and run the existing relevant tests.

This is a request template, not a claim that a specific project or test has been run. Give the agent the relevant files or reproduction steps instead of assuming it knows your application.

Complete the assigned sponsorship step

If the request needs ad authorization, open the Wave web companion using the same Google account and locate the matching request. Read the displayed requirement before starting. Complete the assigned sponsored group and return to the editor. A longer task may pause for another ad step when its authorized budget is used. Signing in alone does not authorize an AI request.

Inspect the result

  1. Read the agent's explanation and review the actual file diff.
  2. Check that unrelated files, dependencies, and formatting were not changed unnecessarily.
  3. Run the relevant test command from your project's own documentation.
  4. For this example, try an exact duplicate, a name with extra spaces, and a different letter case. Also check that a genuinely new item can still be added.

When something fails

Copy the error text and the command that produced it, remove secrets, and send a follow-up request with the observed behavior. Avoid repeatedly asking the agent to “fix everything.” A precise reproduction helps distinguish a code issue from a missing dependency, unavailable model, or expired session. If the ad completed but the request remains paused, use the sponsorship troubleshooting steps in How Wave works.
